From the Directors

Welcome to the Winston Chung Global Energy Center (WCGEC), a dynamic hub of innovation
and collaboration at the University of California, Riverside. Established in 2011 through the
generous endowment of entrepreneur and inventor Winston Chung, WCGEC was founded with a
bold vision: to advance next-generation technologies for energy generation, storage, and
distribution on a global scale.
As part of the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE), our Center serves
as a catalyst for multidisciplinary research and forward-thinking solutions in the energy domain.
Today, our work is organized across two major tracks—Power Systems and Energy
Materials—where we explore cutting-edge topics including rechargeable battery technologies,
sustainable energy storage, and data-driven approaches for power systems and smart grid
applications.
Our research extends far beyond the laboratory, also including field demonstration and real-
world testing. From renewable integration and energy efficiency to sustainable infrastructure
development, WCGEC addresses complex energy challenges that impact both local communities
and the global environment. Within our approximately 2,400 square feet of shared lab space in
Bourns Hall, researchers have access to advanced tools for material fabrication, characterization,
and testing—equipping us to move ideas rapidly from concept to application.
At the heart of WCGEC is a culture of collaboration. We proudly partner closely with UCR
colleagues, peer institutions, and industry leaders to create scalable, real-world energy solutions.
Equally important is our commitment to education and outreach—we are deeply invested in
training a diverse, future-ready engineering workforce and in sharing the knowledge and
resources that empower communities to build sustainable energy systems.
As we look toward the future, WCGEC remains steadfast in its mission to lead clean energy
innovation with impact, integrity, and inclusivity. We invite you to explore our work, engage
with our community, and join us in shaping a more sustainable energy future.
