Real-World Application of Energy Storage Systems in Improving Grid Resilience

Dr. Nazaripouya delivered an invited talk on "Real-World Application of Energy Storage Systems in Improving Grid Resilience" at the DISTRIBUTECH International 2020.

His presentation was focused on a novel technology which has been developed for real-time control and operation of a battery storage system to address the complex problems in distribution systems including grid resilience. He showed how the developed technology by considering power system dynamics and incorporating adaptive control techniques, machine learning algorithms, discrete signal processing, and optimization methods enables smart operation of BESS in the grid. Several applications of battery storage such as improving grid resilience in terms of robustness and rapid recovery, smoothing the solar power generation, performing voltage regulation, and shaping power demand were demonstrated over a real-world platform. The demonstration platform including battery storage, solar PV, and DC fast charger interacting with a distribution system were shown and explained how the developed cyber-physical controller manages the power flow of BESS and grid-tie inverter in four quadrants.  The presentation also elaborated on how the control hardware is configured appropriately for interaction of the controller with the grid-tie inverter, battery management system, measurement units, and distribution grid, and how the control software is structured to manage the communication, safe operation and monitoring of the system.  The obtained results were also presented, which show a 45 percent reduction in the deployed battery capacity for solar smoothing, 54 percent improvement in voltage regulation for defined size of storage, and faster recovery of the system under disturbance, compared with common practices.

DISTRIBUTECH International is the leading annual transmission and distribution event with more than 13,500 attendees and 550 exhibitors from 75 countries that addresses technologies used to move electricity from the power plant through the transmission and distribution systems to the meter and inside the home. The conference and exhibition offer information, products and services related to electricity delivery automation and control systems, energy efficiency, demand response, renewable energy integration, advanced metering, T&D system operation and reliability, communications technologies, cyber security, water utility technology and more.
